Two Photographers Launch Boxfotos Airstream

Photographers Matt Larson and Rebecca Sexton Larson, cofounders of Boxfotos, launched a new adventure at their 3rd annual Open Studio held several weeks ago, the “Boxfotos Airstream.” The Airstream will serve as their home away from home for location and travel shoots, their moving gallery and studio, office and classroom.

The Larsons began looking for a gallery space in Tampa; Charleston, SC; and then Berea and Louisville, KY, but instead ended up with a 23-foot, 2008 International Flying Cloud Airstream. Matt explained,“We just couldn’t find an affordable building for a living and gallery space and soon realized we could have all our favorite cities as our home towns if we had a moving space.”

More than a year ago, the husband and wife photographers built their website Boxfotos.com (originally as a blog) and announced they would soon be the Boxfotos Airstream gallery and shooting studio. The idea caught a lot buzz from friends, collectors and art organizations that they decided to buy the Airstream. “It was one of those cases where we acted as if we were up and running in the Airstream, but we hadn’t even bought it yet,” Matt Larson. “Once we started getting requests to bring it to various cities, we knew we were onto something special.”

The art couple plan to teach photography (historical processes) on location, offer portfolio reviews, travel and exhibit their works of art out of the Boxfotos Airstream.

Matt Larson has 27 years of corporate marketing and photography experience and is known for his work with toy cameras.

Rebecca Sexton Larson is an award-winning artist with three Florida Artist Fellowships, and was awarded the title of Tampa’s Photo Laureate in 2005. Rebecca has 12 years of museum experience as an educator.

Currently, they both create works of art using historical photographic processes such as tintype, glass plate, cyanotype, vandyke, silver, salt print- ing, etc. If you want to see the Larsons’ work, have them visit your organization or take a class, email them or go to boxfotos.com and/or friend them on Facebook at “Boxfotos Airstream.”

2005 - Two-person Exhibition
The Arts Center, St. Petersburg, FL http://www.sptimes.com/2004/12 By LENNIE BENNETT; Published December 16, 2004 Need a respite from all that tinsel and a color palette limited to red and green? Visit the Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., St. Petersburg for "Fixed in Time: The Photography of Rebecca Sexton Larson and Matt Larson." The couple do not work as a team; their very different stylistic approaches to the medium are obvious. They have in common an experimental technical approach, using back-to-the-basics equipment - she a pinhole camera, he a simple toy one - that gives their work, individual as it is, a shared freshness and directness. Both are narrative artists though Matt Larson's photographs (Fragile is above, left) are more straightforward; Rebecca Sexton Larson (whose Bird That Flutters is above, right) paints and draws on hers. The overall effect from both is evocative. Have a seat and slow down.
